THE JAMES J. DAVIS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 2010 FINALISTS

Congratulations to Michael Brent Zundel of Montana State University, our 2010 Scholarship Winner!

Michael Brent Zundel is a Civil Engineering--Bio-Resources and Hispanic Studies major in the Honors Program at Montana State University. He will be studying in Valdivia, Chile for the 2010/2011 academic year. Zundel explained his reasons for wanting to study abroad this way:

"I hope to be able to work internationally after attaining an advanced engineering degree and, due in no small part to my experiences with EWB [Engineers Without Borders], feel that understanding the culture of another nation is equally as important as having a strong technical background. If you cannot understand where the other people are coming from -- and understand all of their fears, desires, and needs -- you cannot begin to help them with any sort of engineering project. I want to understand not only the engineering aspect of aid work, but also the societal aspects."

"Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights, it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living." - Mariam Beard
